Why do people use terms like "fibromyalgia" or "chronic fatigue syndrome" or "irritable bowel syndrome"?

  • Why don't they just say "woefulness"?

    A third-generation freethinker

  • because that would not describe what the illness is about. The reason there are 3 different names is because they are 3 different things.I only know about the fibromyalgia,it can be from the genetics in your family or a great trauma to your body like a car wreck. It makes your mussels hurt as though you have been beat up it can be activated by stress or by weather or by straining like to put some thing up or exercise. So if you think they are all generated just by the mind your amusingly incorrect .

  • If you suffered with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or fibromyalgia, you would understand that it's not just the usual acheness and fatigue that everyone goes through on occasion. These illnesses are very real, and very disabling. I not only have almost constant pain and fatigue, but also brain lesions which have diminished some basic thought processes. It is not a case of not having the capacity for coping. It's a case of enduring something that drastically affects your life. I hope you never have to experience this yourself.

    From CFIDS.org:

Although its name trivializes the illness as little more than mere tiredness, chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS), also known as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), brings with it a constellation of debilitating symptoms.

CFIDS is characterized by incapacitating fatigue (experienced as profound exhaustion and extremely poor stamina) and problems with concentration and short-term memory. It is also accompanied by flu-like symptoms such as pain in the joints and muscles, unrefreshing sleep, tender lymph nodes, sore throat and headache. A distinctive characteristic of the illness is post-exertional malaise, a worsening of symptoms following physical or mental exertion occurring within 12-48 hours of the exertion and requiring an extended recovery period.

The symptoms of CFIDS are highly variable and fluctuate in severity, complicating treatment and the ill personâ ™s ability to cope with the illness. Most symptoms are invisible, which makes it difficult for others to understand the vast array of debilitating symptoms with which people with the illness must contend.

  • the person asking this is a complete moron that has no experience or research involving any three of the conditions. my mother has all three and they are not all necessarily related. fibro can be debilitating and controls your life just like ibs... with ibs you have to go #2 at any given time and not the easy way, some ppl with have to wear diapers, can't leave their house or work, time trips, cannot go out to dinner etc... some helpful medicines exists to control ibs.. as for fibro some antidepressants help but overall you are in bone/muscle/nerve pain your entire life and often have severe flair ups where you cant do anything thus causing cfs; where all you do is sleep.. i have a bad back, a really bad back, and can relate to my mothers fibro, we both take vicodin for pain daily and muslce relaxers to control the spasm and extreme nerve/bone/muscle pain.

woefulness??? taken directly from the "New Oxford American Dictionary"

    woeful ˈwÅfÉ™l
    adjective
characterized by, expressive of, or causing sorrow or misery : her face was woeful.
â ¢ very bad; deplorable : the remark was enough to establish his woeful ignorance about the theater.
    DERIVATIVES
woefully ˈwoʊfəli adverb [as submodifier ] : the police response was woefully inadequate.
    woefulness ˈwoʊfəlnəs noun

the pain or experiences may be 'woeful' but so is cancer or a slipped or herniated disc, or bad knee.. but thats why they call it cancer not 'woefulness'

people like you should really think before opening your big fat mouth... you are belittling ppl with a real condition, just like anxiety or diabetes.

think for once, please for all of us, so we dont have to write explanations for your stupid thoughts so no one believes them.

buy a book, you obviously have a computer, GOOGLE IT fool

third generation? i dont think stupidity has a generation; necessarily

    here you go, read up:

    http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/fibromy...

ps.. im really not trying to be rude, but when you ask a dumb question you get a dumb answer... and yes i was a teacher and dumb questions do exists... most of the time they shouldnt exists, most ppl dont pay attention, think they are too smart to learn from others or flat out dont pay attention or give a ****... just like to make rude remarks. my 2 cents.

  • Because we have them. Just for me- i suffer two out of three of these.

  • maybe there putting a name to there disease since these don't really have a cure just things to help them out except maybe the chronic fatigue syndrome....woefulness thats funny but i bet you wouldn't be saying that if you had them.....

personally i would call them punishments by GOD

  • You're not asking this question you idiot. You are simply trying to express self-wisdom to everybody none of whom are interested.

  • So I guess you are saying that since we do not know everything about what causes them, they do not exist. So lets not try to figure anything out. If we don't already know the answer, let's not bother trying to understand it

  • Patients (actual human beings) often experience sets of symptoms for which doctors and/or the medical science community cannot find a direct cause.

While a few of the above have deep rooted psychiatric issues, you cannot write off the entire cohort as malingerers.

Part of being a freethinker is knowing one is not infallible.

  • What is woefulness and what does it have to do with these ill-defined medical syndromes?

As a 'freethinker', are you aware that something that is 'free' is usually worth what you pay for it?

I would be impressed if you were a "critical thinker".
