"If you have had a big night out and not arrived home until the small hours of the morning, you may still be over the limit when you wake up. Any alcohol in the bloodstream negatively affects a person's driving abilities,"
It is incorrectly assumed that having a sleep and a shower after a night's drinking will miraculously result in a zero blood alcohol reading.
"The more you drink, the longer it takes for your blood alcohol concentration to return to zero,"
"The only thing which will lower a person's blood alcohol content is time. Given that the body is only able to process about one standard drink an hour, recovery periods can become quite lengthy," he said.
The message is simple.
"If you plan on having a big night, then do not drive a motor vehicle. Make sure that you are fully recovered the next day before picking up your keys to drive anywhere. No one wants to dampen the holiday spirit. We are asking all motorists to behave responsibly in order to keep our roads safer and ensure that everyone has a safe and happy holiday with their loved ones,"
