What is the most effective way to keep your neighbors dog from getting into your trash cans?

  • Cover the trash in chocolate.

  • Spray your garbage bags with a kitchen cleaner, preferably a non toxic one. Keep the lid on the garbage container. You are speaking about an outside can aren't you. If inside, you could do the same, and you need to train him. You need to keep an eye on him and catch him and then spray him with cold water and tell him he is bad. Then you bring him to the can and say no, no, firmly. Then you sit back and see if he goes in it, if he goes near it, then you have to let him and scold him again, until he will not go near it at all. It was on the television show about animals and this women goes to their houses and cures the animals of bad habits. GL

  • Start having your neighbors come and clean up the mess and then they will see that their dogs do not get into your trash.

  • We have the occasional raccoon/bear problem and use bungee cords across the lid and through the handles. This works best with the metal trash cans, but still works with the plastic bins if you get the kind with handles.

I'm not sure whether your garbage collector will appreciate it, but it will keep the dogs out.

  • Tabasco and pepper/chili powder, it works.
