PLEASE PLEASE HELP! Frosting To thin!?

  • I used this recipe
    1 stick butter
    1/2 c. Crisco
    1 c. sugar
    4 tbsp. sifted flour
    3-4 tbsp. cocoa
    1 c. milk
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1-2 tsp. vanilla

    Place all ingredients into mixer bowl and mix at slow speed until combined. Next beat at high speed about 5 minutes or more until icing is fluffy.

    it's Too thin and gritty if you know what i mean!

    How can I thicken it!

    Gritty as in I can feel the sugar..

  • I would add corn starch to thicken it. A better alternative to adding more flour.

    Powdered sugar will work as you discovered.


  • Add more powdered sugar. Are you sure you weren't supposed to use all powdered sugar? You may need to add a good little bit of it to get the right consistency. It shouldn't affect the taste in a negative way.


  • Take 1/2 of the frosting out of the bowl and add 1/4C-1/2C crisco to the rest. CONTINUE to beat until smooth. If not chocolately enough...add more cocoa.

    Next time you make this frosting, beat the butter, sugar, & crisco together FIRST until smooth. This will help the sugar mix into the butter/crisco and make your frosting smooth, not grainy.
