Mass airflow sensor problem.?

  • unplugged it and plugged it back in. question is would a good maf still come up with a check engine light when unplugged and the plugged back in.

  • when you unplug it, it will immedietely set a DTC. when you plug it back in, the Dtc will still be set until the next ignition cycle. it will then go into history, but the light will still be on. the 3rd ignition cycle, if it passes all, will turn off the light.

  • Try cleaning the sensor. Make sure you use Mass Airflow Sensor cleaner only. Don't use carburetor cleaner or you will destroy the sensor.

The link below is an example of this product. You can get it at most major automotive parts stores for about $5 a can. 1 can will clean this sensor several times.

Cleaning the sensor is relatively easy and requires a minimum of tools. Usually only a screwdriver. Just make sure you follow the instructions on the can.

Your Mass Airflow Sensor should be cleaned every time you replace your air filter.

If cleaning this sensor doesn't solve your problem you will need to replace the sensor.

  • If the vehicle was running and you unplugged the sensor you would set a maf code because the computer saw no info coming from that sensor when it should, hence it would turn the light on. The computer doesn't know that you unplugged it just that it saw a problem on that circuit. So yes, if the maf is good and you unplug it WHILE the vehicle is on, it will set a maf code.
