Is there a big difference between lens filters?

  • Hi guys- I am looking at buying some filters for my 70-300 mm lens and was curious if there is much difference between brands of filters. I have found Crystal Optics and Merkury Optics on ebay. They both sell kits of 3 different type lens and are priced basically the same. I am needing a 62 mm filter. Are there better brands to look at also? I don't want to spend a lot of money, but if price is comparable I definetiley want to get the better quality.

  • I use Hoya filters and they seem of very tough build quality. I also have a few generic ones where the glass rattles in the filter mounting.

    More important than the quality of construction is the optics. The optics must be free of distortion (i.e. the glass is flat), and preferably anti glare coated. The latter starts getting expensive.

    Hoya filters are also available on ebay and are usually 3-5 times cheaper than buying from a camera retailer.
