How worried should I be? 8 wk old dachshund puppies?
I am going home on my lunch break to check on them and let them go potty but in the meantime, I am so worried that I can't even get any work done. I know that the puppies are up to date on their shots, but I also know parvo can't be ruled out until they get more shots for that (right?).
If anyone can help me calm down, or if I SHOULD be this worried...
anything?
You need to bring them into your vet ASAP to rule out Parvo and any other reason for blood in the pups stools!
Next, how have they been acting? Are they normal happy puppies who are interested in playing/eating/etc? or are they acting lethargic and tired and not eating?
If they are acting and eating normally for puppies of that age, I would say, its probably nothing more than a case of worms, or stress. My puppy had some bloody stool when he was that age. I called my vet and had him tested for everything. When the results came back negative, she asked me if there were any stress factors that could be effecting him during poop time. My neighbors kids were apparently calling him and trying to pet him while he was pooping and this caused him to squeeze too hard which broke some anal blood vessels. After I learned this, I took him to a quiet place in the yard to poop and we haven't had a problem since. So it may be stress.
If the dogs are not acting normal- (tired/not eating) then you are probably right to worry.
Either way, what you need to do is take them to the vet. I understand that you are working, but what you should do is call the vet on your lunchbreak. Tell them the story, and make an appointment for as soon as possible. They may be able to give you some suggestions to help in the mean time before their appointment. Also, the vet's office will require fecal samples of your pups. Make sure you get good samples, and that you know which sample belongs to which pup.
Again, if they are acting normal, they are most likely fine, but you will need to call your vet either way. Try to calm down and focus on work. Good luck.
Add: contrary to what PUREBREDS ROCK said...YES, Parvo CAN be treated when caught in time, and if the determination of the pup is strong. I had my 4 month old pup survive parvo 2 yrs ago after everyone said "just put him down, he won't make it!"
At the stages in parvo where there is blood in the stool, it is sometimes too late to save the dog. It means that the virus is causing the lining of the intestines to shed off.
Parvovirus is very nasty, and cannot be cured. The only thing that the vet can do is treat the sypmtoms, and hope the dog can pull out.
