How worried should I be? 8 wk old dachshund puppies?

  • My mom brought home two 8 week old dachshund puppies on Saturday. They were fine until this morning, when my mom got up, she said one of them had a bloody stool. It was dark red blood and I am at work today and can't take her to the vet, and my mom is at work too.

I am going home on my lunch break to check on them and let them go potty but in the meantime, I am so worried that I can't even get any work done. I know that the puppies are up to date on their shots, but I also know parvo can't be ruled out until they get more shots for that (right?).

If anyone can help me calm down, or if I SHOULD be this worried...

    anything?

  • You should be that worried. Parvo can kill very quickly and it does. If there is blood in their stool they should have been vet checked as soon as possible.

You need to bring them into your vet ASAP to rule out Parvo and any other reason for blood in the pups stools!

  • You should call you vet and see if they allow drop-offs. Then you can drop them off on your lunch break and someone can pick them up after work if that is possible. I would definitely call your vet and at least speak to someone about the situation.

  • bloody stools are never good! take to vet asap!

  • Okay, first of all- take a deep breath. Freaking out while you are at work is not going to do you or your pups any good whatsoever. Take a minute and just calm down.
Next, how have they been acting? Are they normal happy puppies who are interested in playing/eating/etc? or are they acting lethargic and tired and not eating?
If they are acting and eating normally for puppies of that age, I would say, its probably nothing more than a case of worms, or stress. My puppy had some bloody stool when he was that age. I called my vet and had him tested for everything. When the results came back negative, she asked me if there were any stress factors that could be effecting him during poop time. My neighbors kids were apparently calling him and trying to pet him while he was pooping and this caused him to squeeze too hard which broke some anal blood vessels. After I learned this, I took him to a quiet place in the yard to poop and we haven't had a problem since. So it may be stress.
If the dogs are not acting normal- (tired/not eating) then you are probably right to worry.
Either way, what you need to do is take them to the vet. I understand that you are working, but what you should do is call the vet on your lunchbreak. Tell them the story, and make an appointment for as soon as possible. They may be able to give you some suggestions to help in the mean time before their appointment. Also, the vet's office will require fecal samples of your pups. Make sure you get good samples, and that you know which sample belongs to which pup.

Again, if they are acting normal, they are most likely fine, but you will need to call your vet either way. Try to calm down and focus on work. Good luck.

  • I have two mini doxies, and this has never happened. I would call a vet and tell them the problem and see what they suggest.

  • I would take them to a vet. Could be worms or an infection.

  • he needs to go to the vet now its parvo i know i do doggie rescue and iv seen 36 parvo cases GO TO THE VET NOW!!!!!IT WILL KILL THE PUPPY WITH IN 3 DAYS IF NOT TREATED

  • You have the right to be that worried. I'd rather pay a vet visit to know that there is nothing wrong than come home to a dead pup. I love dachshunds and personally, it's the best breed I've ever owned. They are still young, so yes, I would be worried.

  • I would be VERY worried if this were my pup. Parvo is very serious and most often deadly, especially in an 8 week old puppy. Their survival rate is cut in half and practically half again being so young. Yes, it is true that they have to have all their shots before you could "rule out" Parvo, but even vaccinated dogs can get certain strands of the ParvoVirus. Sounds like when you get off work you need to find an emergency vet and get that baby to them. Bloody stool at 8 weeks old for ANY reason, it NOT normal.

Add: contrary to what PUREBREDS ROCK said...YES, Parvo CAN be treated when caught in time, and if the determination of the pup is strong. I had my 4 month old pup survive parvo 2 yrs ago after everyone said "just put him down, he won't make it!"

  • You should be very worried, and you need to get both of those dogs to the vet. The test for parvo is very easy, and quick.

At the stages in parvo where there is blood in the stool, it is sometimes too late to save the dog. It means that the virus is causing the lining of the intestines to shed off.

Parvovirus is very nasty, and cannot be cured. The only thing that the vet can do is treat the sypmtoms, and hope the dog can pull out.
