Representantes de Brasil, Estados Unidos, España, Taiwán y Panamá participan en la conferencia "Influenza pandémica y otras Zoonosis emergentes: una amenaza permanente", que realiza desde hoy el Instituto Conmemorativo Gorgas de Estudios de la Salud (ICGES).

La conferencia se lleva a cabo hasta mañana en conmemoración de los 80 años de fundación de la institución en Panamá y en ella participa también la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) y la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS).

En su primer día, la conferencia abordó los temas "La influenza pandémica", del coronel Kent E. Kester, del "Walter Reed Army Institute of Research", y la "Preparación antipandémica en Centroamérica" por parte de la doctora Isabella Danel, del Centres for Desease Control and Prevention.


También se habló sobre "La evolución de la vigilancia virológica de la influenza en España" por parte de Pilar Pérez Breña, del Instituto de Salud Carlos III de España. Asimismo, las "Perspectivas asiática sobre el manejo de casos humanos con influenza H5N1" de Shu Hui Tseng del Centres for Desease Control and Prevention de Taiwán. Finalmente, la galena Ximena Aguilera, representante de la OPS y de la OMS, expuso sobre "El sistema de alerta global y regulaciones internacionales con referencia a influenza y los brotes de fiebre amarilla en Argentina, Brasil y Paraguay". Para mañana los temas versarán sobre la "zoonosis emergentes: actualidad y acciones futuras", a cargo de Olga Bravo, del Ministerio de Desarrollo Agropecuario de Panamá; de Mat Millar, del Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute; y Marcela Uhart, del Wildlife Conservation Society de Nueva York.

El Instituto Gorgas se inauguró el 17 de agosto de 1928 con el nombre de Laboratorio Conmemorativo Gorgas como un centro de estudio de enfermedades tropicales, en honor al médico que erradicó la fiebre amarilla de las ciudades de Panamá y Colón, el estadounidense William C. Gorgas.

En 1994 fue bautizado con el nombre de Centro Conmemorativo Gorgas de Información e Investigación en Salud y en 1997 se le asignó el nombre que tiene en la actualidad, Instituto Conmemorativo Gorgas de Estudios de la Salud (ICGES).

En 2005, el Gorgas se convirtió en una institución autónoma, ligada al Ministerio de Salud de Panamá, pero con su propia personalidad jurídica.


Representatives from Brazil, USA, Spain, Taiwan and Panama participated in the conference "Pandemic Influenza and Other Emerging Zoonoses: a permanent threat", which performs today from the Gorgas Memorial Institute for the Study of Health (ICGES).

The conference takes place until tomorrow to commemorate 80 years of founding of the institution in Panama and it also participates in the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and World Health Organization (WHO).

Also, the "Asian Perspectives on handling cases of human influenza H5N1" Shu-Hui Tseng of the Centers for Desease Control and Prevention in Taiwan.

Finally, the galena Ximena Aguilera, representative of PAHO and WHO, spoke about "The global warning system and international regulations with reference to influenza and yellow fever outbreaks in Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay."

The Institute Gorgas was inaugurated on August 17, 1928 under the name of the Gorgas Memorial Laboratory as a centre for study of tropical diseases, in honor of the doctor who eradicated yellow fever in the cities of Panama and Colon, the American William C. Gorgas.

In 1994 he was named Gorgas Memorial Center for Information and Health Research in 1997 and was assigned the name which is at present Gorgas Memorial Institute for the Study of Health (ICGES).

In 2005, the Gorgas became an autonomous institution linked to the Ministry of Health of Panama, but with its own legal personality.
