Bharat Ratna
It is a known fact that after the Pokharan blast the western countries and Japan banned foreign aid but in spite of that these nations could not stop progress of this nation and India could stand on his on legs. Thanks to Bajpai.
To counter the request Congress has brought the name of Joyty Basu. There cannot be dispute about him also who ruled W.B. for more than 23 years as C.M. But he had never been a national leader.
What Congress must be thinking is this award should go to Sonia Gandhi only. because she belongs to Gandhi Nehru dynasty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
Don't make the subject political and don't undervalue the title also. Be fare and the concerned committee should consider the name of Atal ji in right perspective.
Raghuvir I know you are stuck with history and its fragments on your mind BUT I do not care nor we should care the languages as languages are merely vehicles for our thoughts that need not be considered foreign or native because the idea of a language is to COMMUNICATE.
There was a time when Indian languages were decaying and were primitive enough that a rich language like Sanskrit grew. Please learn that a rich civilization who works hard and has a real basis to stand creates the richer languages which are later adapted by humans of all types.
Sanskrit, Greek, Latin, English and before them thousands of other languages were created to communicate. The process is on continuum hence get out of your history and come to reality.
I do not care who is a foreigner and what language is foreign or native. IF we can not communicate our selves properly we must throw away that language and create a new one. BUT this does not work as like you there have been many thinkers who were forever discussing and questioning yet languages die and grow because of their usefulness.
I am saying all above because I was a student of Linguistics for quite some time and have delved into the history of languages as one of my favorite subjects.
PS: I created a new thread to discuss the issues of Languages of India and the world here:

A couple of days ago in this column I accused FP[Free Press] of sacrificing quality by being unduly liberal in publishing articles & letters. At the same time I also admitted that liberality has its good side too, which is that all writers, good & bad, new & old, find a platform to express themselves – which no other newspaper or magazine affords -- so that one gets an opportunity to judge the mental calibre of ‘educated’ or ‘literate’ Indians which otherwise would have remained unknowable. It would seem that FP brought out its January 29 issue with a view to vindicating both of my claims. Speaking of Advani’s “well-meaning suggestion” for awarding Bharat Ratna to A.B.Vajpayee the editor – a rare Indian who would do proud to India anywhere in the world – unwittingly shows his high esteem for Vajpayee in the following words: “A Bharat Ratna can do nothing to add to his stature. His contributions in the service of the nation speak for themselves. A devalued State honour need not be embellished with an avoidable association with his name.” Most wonderful words by any standard!
Contrast this with a letter on the same subject that FP has published side by side with the abovementioned small editorial. The letter writer writes, “Atalji is the most undeserving candidate for India’s topmost civilian honour. Honestly speaking, only Indira Gandhi deserves it.” Well done and thank you, Mr Godboley, you have provided me with a classic example of my second claim, that FP by its liberality provides an opportunity to judge the mental calibre of ‘educated’ or ‘literate’ Indians which otherwise would have remained unknowable. I shall use this letter of yours to show to the world the mental calibre of the Indians – for example, why they have been voting the most anti-nation & anti-people party to power for the last 61 years. What else can one expect from an electorate who cannot differentiate a wolf from a lamb and still calls oneself literate!
The Congress carries in its genes the blueprint to ruin India & Indians totally. Nehru was the seed and Indira Gandhi was the flower. The all-round ruin that one finds today in India is her handiwork. Sonia Gandhi & Co. are only seeking to complete the work that she left incomplete. The devilish mindset of Indira Gandhi and her innumerable misdeeds are so well-known that one feels ashamed of being born in the same country as she. In sharp contrast, Vajpayee may be a soft person – but that is because of his innate civility and humanity. For a politician to remain civilized and humane is an incredible feat – especially in India where only crooks and goons and those with a most perverse mindset can become a politician.
That a so-called ‘literate’ person could not differentiate between a wolf & a lamb is incredible. Then what can one expect of an Indian illiterate? To think that these literates and illiterates have been gifted adult franchise to decide who will rule India! Whom else they can elect but Indiras, Arjuns, Digvijays, Mayawatis, Mulayams, Lalus, Karunanidhis, Jayalalitas, Madhu Kodas, Shibu Sorens, Buddhadebs, Jyoti Basus ad infinitum! The reality of Indian literacy was revealed a few days ago when the answer papers of the last year’s MPSEB merit listers were put on the Internet. 80% of the answers of the top merit lister were wrong! Another merit lister could not spell the word ‘knowledge’ correctly. Such is the state of affairs of the merit listers. That of the passers can easily be imagined. As for the 63% students who give up school before making it to SSC, well, God bless them! Such being the state of affairs of Indian education, it does not require the knowledge of astrology to predict the fate of India.
Likewise we do not have any real gems of people because there are none. We simply have artificially carved ugly Indians unworthy of any award.
However I do suggest that we should have an award for highest held office with maximum corruption. This will be the best reward for the corrupt bastards that we have leading this nation.
