As your baby gets older, will they drink less formula? (under 12 mos)?

  • Some people have told me that my son (who is almost 10 months) will drink less milk and eat more food. Right now he drinks 8 oz every four hours plus his food. Am I supposed to change this or am I still supposed to give him his full bottle? Does this change when they begin drinking whole milk? If so, when did you do this?

  • It is recommended that children switch to whole milk at 1 year. At at about the same time, 12-15 months, they should start getting more calories from food as opposed to milk. At 10 months, you could definitely start scaling back on the amount of formula you're giving him and do more foods. He's probably ready to start playing with finger foods - soft, cooked veggies and fruits. Good luck!

  • Yes, it does decrease as they get older. I just gradually started feeding more solids and less bottles/milk. Now at 14 mos, my girl only gets one bottle a day and the bulk of her diet is square meals. although I do still give her an Omega 3 liquid supplement mixed in with her juice. Makes me feel better now that she's not nursing.

  • they should eat more food :)

  • should be on solids now and given juice or water with food, can switch to just a bottle at night now

  • well ya my son is only 6 months and drinks less milk cause i give him solids now

  • Yes...Really by that age he shold only be having a bottle of formula like 2-3 times a day. LIke upon waking, nap, & bedtime.
Then about every 2-3 hours either a meal or snack. And should be using a sippy cup to drink water, or juice.
    Example:
Breakfast(infant cereal, cream of wheat, jar or mashed fruit etc) and if he usually takes a early morning nap, then he may want a bottle after breakfast, but only give him half the amount you usually would.
Then about 2-3 hours later a snack ( graham crackers, yogurt, ritz crackers, dry cereal and to drink some juice diluted equal parts with water like 2 oz water 2 oz juice)
Then around noon or 1 = Lunch
Depending on his teeth ( how many he has) he can have the same food you eat. Try gerber graduates meals..my kids loved them and they're fast & easy & healthy. By now, he should be in 3rd stage baby food & table food.( example) He can have baked chicken, mashed potatoes, and apple sauce... and some water to drink. And the same for dinner. As soon as he is off the formula ( at 1 year) you will begin giving him WHOLE milk until age 2 then switch to 1%.
    Hope this Helps! Good luck!

  • He should not have more then 32 oz in a 24 hour period.

  • By 12 months they should be transitioned to whole milk and eating regular food (to an extent, you obviously wouldnt feed them steak or anything). They should no longer rely on milk as their main source of nutrients. Since your child is 10 months, it would be a good idea to start transitioning him to eating bigger meals with less milk. Dont do it all at once though, do it slowly, gradually add more and more food and less formula to his diet so it wont make him constipated.

  • A baby should be getting the bulk of his/her nutrition from formula or breast milk until they turn 1. At 10 months they are learning to eat but still need about 32oz of formula a day.
