There is ATA and SATA.
1: Unplug your computer and everything in it
2: Open it up and touch the metal part of the case to discharge in static electricity. Keep and Hand or finger touching it almost always.
3: Look for the green light on your mother board to go out to make sure the capacitors are discharged. If there are not any lights on you are good to proceed.
4a:If you get ATA then you will need to set the jumpers to either slave or cable select depending on what your first drive is. (usually labeled on the back next to the jumpers.
4b: Then you will need to connect the cable that goes from your already installed HD to your mother board to your new hard drive. (There should be a connection point on the cable in between your mother board and current hard drive.
4c: Now connect the power cable to the hard drive and make sure it is securely in place. The Hard drive should fit inside of a slot somewhere next to the existing one and screw in place.
If you have an SATA if have included links on how to install it as well.
2.) You decide weather you're going to use that as a slave or your primary.

If you have a machine with SATA drives, your mother board should determine which is master and which is slave (primary and secondary). However, if it is PATA or EIDE, you may has a ribbon cable and you'll have to set the jumpers to cable select. Or, if you have 2 ribbon cables, you have to set the jumpers to master and slave. So, it is not difficult to do, just difficult to give you step-by-step directions without greater detail.
Additionally, you might want to consider getting an external USB HD. They are cheap, easy, mobile and pretty much universal.
1.
Unpack hard drive and open the computer case.
2.
Move the jumper to the SLAVE position on the Hard Drive, the slave position is indicated on the Hard Drive
3.
Install the Hard Drive in the system and Connect the hard drive on the same ribbon cable as your existing hard drive is on. Be careful to not confuse it with the cable that the Optical Drive is on. If it is an SATA hard drive then connect the SATA cable to the Hard Drive and the System.
4.
Connect a 4-pin Molex cable (Power Supply Cord) to the drive. Again, if it is an SATA Hard Drive then connect the 4-pin Molex cable to teh SATA adapter included with the hard drive.
5.
Check that all screws are tight, and close the case.
6.
Enjoy the additional space on your computer.
If you need any further assistance just send me a message on here and I will get with you as soon as possible.
5.
Make sure you buy the right type. If you have an EIDE type, this is what you need. If you have a SATA type, this is what you need. If you are unsure, look at how it plugs into the motherboard. If it is a flat cable about 1.5 inches wide, it is EIDE; otherwise it is a narrow cable about 0.5 inch wide, 0.3 in thick and a SATA. If you have an EIDE style, install it as a slave drive and leave the current as the master.
There is no OS on a hard drive; format it as directed for your OS on your pc.
Do not rush through the install and all should fall in place.
